diseasesInflammation is a response from your immune system to an irritant, infection, or injury. It is perhaps the most common “silent” medical condition people face today, in large part because of improper diet and nutrition, lack of exercise, acute and chronic disease and injury conditions, stress, and environmental toxicity.

Inflammation has different names when it appears in different parts of the body. Most allergy and asthma sufferers are familiar with rhinitis (inflammation of the nose), sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses), and asthma (inflammation of the airways). Arthritis is inflammation of the joints, dermatitis is inflammation of the skin, and bursitis is inflammation of the bursae, and so on.

MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY is also an issue with inflammation. Medical experts estimate that perhaps 80% of people today have a significant Magnesium deficiency. Please see our section on Transdermal Magnesium for full details about this vital mineral that our body desparately needs, and especially during times of illness, disease, and injury. We are convinced that Magnesium has a significant role to play in the alleviation of inflammation, as discussed further below.

Ease Inflammation

Plant-based remedies can play a key role in lessening pain and discomfort. For example, Solomon's Seal and the other herbs we use contain the natural pain reliever, allantoin.

Allantoin is a natural soothing, anti-irritant, and skin protectant that increases the water content of the extracellular matrix which provides structural support to cells and is an important part of connective tissue. It also increases the smoothness of the skin, promotes cell replication and healing of wounds, burns, and scars.

Herbs also permeate to deep cellular and tissue/joint levels, and work to make ongoing adjustments in stimulating proper body functions. For example, they may help stimulate the regulation of fluids in joint-buffering membranes like bursae or synovial, or even adjust tensions of ligaments and tendons during recovery.

With increased hydration, the tissues, organs, joints, etc. can assimilate the therapeutic phytonutrients in the herbs faster and better for optimal health restoration to the affected area or general health.

The initial inflammatory response to an infection, irritation, or injury can be Acute or Chronic. Acute inflammation is short-term and common to most injuries. Chronic inflammation lasts longer and is the basis or outcome of many diseases and health conditions. In either instance, the root-cause of inflammation, scientifically, is failure of two-way communication between nerves. One-way traffic to nerves is the main cause of inflammation in the body. Immune cells are being continuously attacked, and nothing is communicating with the nerves to tell them to calm down.

Acute Inflammation

inflammationAn infection, irritation or injury sets off a specific cascade of events in which your white blood cells and some special chemicals called cytokines mobilize to protect you. This normal type of inflammation is a good thing. It helps your body protect and heal itself. It is also the first of three overlapping phases of healing (inflammation, repair, remodeling). Read more about the 3 Phases of Healing <HERE>

An acute inflammatory response is characterized by an influx of white blood cells, redness, heat, swelling, pain, and dysfunction of the organs involved. In most cases, acute inflammation lasts only a few days to a week. This response usually promotes healing but, if uncontrolled, may become harmful. This is because too much duress has been placed on the immune system, thus creating an ongoing, simmering chronic low-grade inflammation.

Chronic Inflammation

The primary objective of acute inflammation is to localize and eradicate the irritant and repair the surrounding tissue. This works great for most injuries and strains of daily activity. However, this completely changes in chronic low-grade inflammatory states.

Perhaps the disease of modern society is best described as Chronic Low-Grade Inflammation or Stress. When your immune system shifts out of balance, inflammation can run rampant — causing a chronic, smoldering fire inside your body that contributes to disease and weight gain.

inflammation 3The causes of Chronic Low-Grade Inflammation are all around us, each triggering a raging, unseen inflammation deep inside our cells and tissues:

  • Foods & Habits — major known culprits are processed sugar, gluten, alcohol, caffeine, saturated oils, nitrites, nitrates, and meat, all of which can damage the GI, liver and kidneys. Smoking or consistent drug use also contributes, as does irregular sleep, tension, and so on.
  • Hidden food allergens — food sensitivity, especially gastrointestinal issues. These may be caused by food toxicity, GMO, pesticides, types of foods (like peanuts), etc.
  • Environmental — air and groundwater pollution, fluoridated water, garden and household products and chemicals, detergent, sanitation, etc.
  • Everyday Stress — the tensions of daily life, including relationships, commuting, work, desires, planning a future, and the like
  • Disease — long-term diseases fester an internal, stewing inflammatory state that is a constant assault on the immune system. Lyme Disease, especially its stage of chronic low-grade inflammation that can simmer for many years after initial co-infections.

inflammationChronic low-grade inflammation leads to every one of the major chronic diseases of aging — heart disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia, and more.  It is also the major contributor to obesity. The scientific reason is: Chronic low-grade inflammation is one of the characteristics of the metabolic syndrome and interferes with insulin physiology.

There are many factors that trigger inflammation. They are found in both our internal and external environments and include excessive levels of the hormone insulin (insulin resistance), emotional stress, environmental toxins (heavy metals), free-radical damage, viral, bacterial, fungal other pathogenic infections, obesity, overconsumption of hydrogenated oils, periodontal disease, radiation exposure, smoking, spirochetes such as the Borrelia that causes Lyme Disease, and certain pharmacological drugs.

The Inflammatory Response by the body sets off a series of metabolic challenges and shifts, as the body’s immune system attempts to ward off the infection, disease or injury. Nerves fire, enzymes move into motion, fluids assemble and dissipate, toxins and cellular debris are moved — all this and more to try to bring things back to stasis.

foot massageCirculating Immune Complex

When you injure yourself (for example, your foot), your immune system creates a protein called a Circulating Immune Complex (CIC for short). The CIC travels down to the injured area and causes pain and swelling. The pain you feel is to inform you of the injury or damage. The swelling is protective as it prevents you from moving it and causing more irritation. This is also your body’s way of running to the problem with fresh blood, antibodies and vital cells in order to begin healing and repairing the damage.

Proteolytic Enzymes

Our bodies produce proteolytic enzymes that counteract the inflammation, and usually things return to normal. The problem is, after around age 25, our production of these enzymes drops off almost completely so there is nothing to tell the body to stop the inflammation. This helps explain why a child’s sprained ankle heals much faster than that of an adult.

These proteolytic enzymes are also responsible for cleaning the blood, fighting off viral and bacterial infections and breaking down excess fibrin (scar tissue). Most if not all of these enzymes are mediated by Magnesium. Therefore, as Magnesium levels drop off so do the activities of these crucial biological magnesium sensitive enzymes.

Enzyme Activity

Specialized enzymes break down scar tissue and fibrosis. Fibrosis is scar tissue that builds up in our bodies and over time creates so much restriction and strain on our organs that they can no longer function properly. Enzymes also clean the blood of excess fibrin that causes the blood to thicken, increasing the risk of a blood clot that can cause heart attack or stroke. Enzymes also help take some of the strain off of the liver by keeping the blood clean and not allowing it to thicken beyond normal. Enzymes are very important in inflammation and enzymes bring us back to their fundamental supporter, which is Magnesium.

Note: Juicing fresh produce is certain to bring into your body the necessary live enzymes and micronutrients needed for healing. A topical Magnesium spray will provide 100% usable elemental Magnesium to support healing and regeneration of cells within 20 minutes of application.

The fact is: Magnesium gets depleted in conditions of inflammation, and critically so with chronic low-grade inflammation and stress.

mg save lifeThousands of research studies on all types of diseases, conditions and injuries find a constant in their findings — there is always a Magnesium deficiency. The major reason is that this King of Minerals in our body is the catalyst for hundreds of enzymes that support body health. It controls and conducts many other minerals, most importantly Calcium. It activates the energy force ATP in every one of our cells, regulates insulin, sparks antioxidant formation, creates fluidity in joints, relaxes the muscles, regulates the heart rate, calms the nerves, and so much more. The role of Magnesium is HUGE, especially because it calms the nerves — thereby allowing a two-way communication to take place between the nerves and the immune system.

Chronic Inflammation breaks down healthy tissue in a misdirected attempt at repair and healing. In short, there is nothing present (i.e. especially Magnesium) to prevent a cascade of inflammatory symptoms that continue over time. Here is what happens:

  1. Beyond all the common symptoms of inflammation we find the chronically inflamed tissues themselves may lose their ability to recognize cells that are “self ” from those that are not, and the body may mistakenly identify its own cells as foreign invaders. Signals are generated that attract leukocytes from the bloodstream.
  2. When leukocytes migrate from the bloodstream into the tissue they amplify the inflammatory response.
  3. This internal programming error then continues to trigger and retrigger immune responses, setting the stage for autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, scleroderma, Lyme Disease, and the like. The result is cellular chaos, and what is even more disturbing is that this process may be happening year after year without our even being aware of it. The above diseases, in short, demonstrate a direct inflammatory attack against healthy cells in such places as the joints, nerves and connective tissue. The consequence is that the body is at war with itself.

Magnesium is at the heart of the inflammatory process, modulating cellular events involved in inflammation, especially calming the nerves and allowing communication to take place with the immune cells. In a literal sense, Magnesium helps put the chill on inflammation, playing a crucial role in natural and adaptive immunity. When Magnesium is deficient in an injured area, or as a result of disease, inflammation is the prime first cause. Increases in extracellular magnesium concentration cause a decrease in the inflammatory response while reduction in the extracellular magnesium results in inflammation.

A transdermal Magnesium spray is absorbed 100% by the body in 20 minutes, with absolutely no laxative effect!
